How To Prepare For Your First Visit At An Allergy Clinic

February 12, 2021

Close up of a senior woman having a doctors appointment

Allergies are a common condition that can strike at any time. These are adverse body reactions controlled by factors such as your environment, food intake, and medications. Regardless of whether you know the source of your allergies, visiting an allergy clinic is a great idea.

Allergy clinics specialize in diagnosing allergy triggers and providing appropriate treatment. When visiting an allergy clinic doctor or an allergy specialist is likely to see you.

What To Expect At Your First Allergy Clinic Visit

Allergy clinics can diagnose and treat a wide range of allergies and related conditions. Your primary care physician may have referred you to an allergy specialist to get your allergies diagnosed or to develop a long-term plan of care for your condition. People who experience chronic allergic reactions accompanied by skin inflammation, nasal congestion, and hives are also advised to see an allergist.

Medical History And Current Symptoms

Your allergist will ask about your medical history during the appointment. In addition to previously known allergies, the specialist will assess any pre-existing conditions you might have. Those with asthma can have more severe and complex allergic reactions that need continued treatment.

Also, take note of the duration and areas where you experience symptoms. Signs to look out for include:

  • Red or raised spots on the skin (hives)
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Wheezing
  • Tightness in your chest
  • Inflammation and swelling of various body parts

To supplement your medical history, the doctor may ask a series of questions that are related to common and possible allergens. Expect questions related to your environment, pets, current medications, and previous allergic reactions.

Examination And Diagnosis

The doctor will likely perform a physical examination to assess your general health. If necessary, you will also undergo tests to determine allergy triggers. Common tests are skin tests, pulmonary function tests, and blood tests.

From these, the allergist will study your current condition, medical history, and test results to provide an accurate diagnosis. You may be advised to undergo more tests if more information is needed.

Treatment Plans

Your diagnosis will give way to appropriate treatment. Commonly, you will be asked to avoid things that trigger your allergies. You may also be prescribed allergy medications like antihistamines.

If your allergies don’t go away with regular treatment, your doctor may suggest immunotherapy. This method desensitizes your immune system to a specific allergen through a regular dose of medication. Oral immunotherapy is an emerging method for food allergies. Through regulated daily exposure, this modifies your immune system to avoid the reaction in the first place.
