Reasons to Consider Allergic Reaction Treatment

July 7, 2023

Medical staff treating a skin condition

Have you experienced nausea and diarrhea after eating a particular food? Do you dread the springtime and its blooming trees and flowers? Have you or your child had numerous sinus or ear infections? Did a bee sting send you to the ER? If so, then it may be time to consider allergic reaction treatment. Here is a breakdown of important reasons to see your allergist for the diagnosis and treatment of your allergic reactions.

1.  Your Day-to-Day Life is Impacted

Due to your allergy symptoms, you restrict activities, such as outdoor sports and hobbies. Or you miss numerous work or school days, and you wonder when the next flare-up will occur. You just want to go about your day normally. However, symptoms which persist beyond a week or two need assessment and an expert care plan by an experienced allergy doctor.

2.  You Cannot Sleep

When your symptoms interrupt your sleep, you may feel fatigued during the day. Children who lose sleep due to allergies have noticeably paler skin, dark circles under the eyes, listlessness, fatigue, irritability, and more.

3.  Your Over-the-Counter Medications Do Not Provide Enough Relief

Despite using oral antihistamines, trigger avoidance, and other medications available at the drugstore, your symptoms continue and even worsen. Examples are coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, watery eyes, itchy skin, rashes, and more.

4.  You Have a Family History of Allergies and Asthma

Even if your symptoms are mild, they can escalate if left untreated. This is particularly common if an immediate relative, such as a parent, grandparent, or sibling, has asthma and allergies. Testing with an experienced allergist can tell you if you need allergic reaction treatments to stay healthy.

5.  Your Skin is Itchy and Red

You touch something–a fabric, or a surface cleaned with disinfectant–and you develop itchy hives or a bumpy rash. It does not resolve quickly or easily despite over-the-counter antihistamines and topical medications. This may indicate that you have atopic dermatitis, also known as eczema, or another skin condition.

6.  You Have Made Multiple Trips to the Emergency Room

Anaphylactic allergic reactions to insect stings, inhalants, or food are very serious. They are life-threatening, causing dizziness, fainting, constricted airways, and more.

If you or a loved one has experienced one of these frightening allergic reactions, please see our experienced team for a thorough evaluation and treatment plan. Most people who are prone to anaphylaxis carry rescue medications, like EpiPens, for use in the event of a reaction.

7.  You Experience Multiple Upper Respiratory Infections and Sinusitis

Allergies set the stage for a wide variety of respiratory infections. When you know what causes your allergic reactions and treat them, you can reduce the number of sinus, ear, and throat infections you develop. This is particularly important for the youngest of our patients who are very prone to middle ear infections and tonsillitis.

8.  Giving Up Your Pet or Your Farm Job Are Not Options

Allergy reaction assessment and treatment can help you manage your symptoms of pet allergies, helping you to keep your furry and feathered friends and work at the occupation you love.
